Often, when I tell people I’m a Financial Planner they look at me with that look; you know the one I’m talking about. It says “I have a pretty vague, pre-conceived idea of what you do for a living and I’m not willing to have my mind changed!”.
More times than not, their pre-conconceived idea is so far off the mark because their perception has been created by media, TV ads or bad experiences from long ago. Does this sound like you?
For many of my clients, when we go through that elusive ‘financial planning process’ they find the experience enlightening, empowering and daunting all at the same time. I encourage my prospective client/s to draw a line in the sand about their financial background and come to the initial meeting with fresh eyes. I won’t judge them so why should they judge themselves.
I talk about a whole range of topics including their life, their finances, their non-negotiables in life and try and build something around these areas appropriate to them. The discussion is never about commissions, products or performance. It’s about YOU.
Financial planning advice is not about investments, it’s not about performance, it’s not about products, it’s not about fees. It’s about your journey. What you can do to enhance your current situation. Meeting with a financial planner can show you ways to improve your situation you were not aware of.
I encourage you to speak with a financial planner (not an investment adviser as there is a difference) and discuss your situation. You’d be amazed at how empowering the experience can be.
